BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS EPISODE 4: "A NINJUTSU BATTLE OF THE SEXES!"

After a few episodes of waiting in the background, Sarada Uchiha finally gets a proper introduction, and what better way to welcome her than with a ninja academy battle royale. This episode is all action and features cameos from a wider variety of ninja students. Although the episode lacks any standout scenes, it’s packed with enough goofy humor and fun moments to satisfy my weekly Naruto itch.
The episode opens with yet another one of Shino’s lessons, and just like every other episode, it doesn’t take long for Boruto to completely take it off the rails. This time around his actions draw ire from the female students, who are tired of being lumped in with the unruly male students. An argument between the two sides ensues, and Shino suggests a friendly match of capture the flag to determine who is right. It’s a simple setup, but it moves along quickly and lets the episode get right into the action.

What began as a dispute between Boruto and Sarada ultimately pulls in the entire class, which serves as a great opportunity to showcase the abilities of all their classmates: Cho-Cho’s brute strength, Denki’s hacking, Metal’s quick reflexes. Almost every student gets a chance to shine, even if it is only for a moment. This is both a strength and weakness of the episode. It doesn’t feature any encounters as memorable as the Metal Lee battle from last week’s episode, but there are way more characters in play.
The resulting sequence is undoubtedly entertaining, but I must admit a little disappointment that Sarada did not get a bigger part in the episode. Early on it seems that the tension between her and Boruto will be the focus, and I hoped it would culminate in an encounter between them like Boruto’s battle with Iwabe. The episode teases a clash between the two a few times, but something else always intervenes. As the children of Naruto and Sasuke, there is no doubt that these two will have big roles to play in the series’ future, so I hope their relationship is given a chance to grow sometime soon.
The episode strays away from showing anything too noteworthy, but the final moments do feature another appearance of the mysterious creature that has been taking control of Boruto’s classmates. This time, however, its appearance is directly connected to Boruto, raising several questions about how the two might be related. Could Boruto have a beast inside him just like his father? Or is he falling prey just like his friends? It’s another effective tease, one that keeps the hooks in for at least one more week. Let’s hope that whatever they have planned it is worth this drawn-out reveal.

The Verdict
Although this episode didn’t feature any epic battles or shocking reveals, the variety of talents displayed by Boruto’s classmates left a smile on my face. Although brief, it also left us with some questions to consider heading into next week. The episodes continue to be mostly inconsequential, but I don’t mind as long as they are interesting. Looking back at the original series, these types of episodes are par for the course. I just hope the show doesn’t make us wait too long to see what it's got in store.
